European Football Championships

EDM number 1047 in 1995-96, proposed by Ann Winterton on 24/06/1996.

That this House congratulates the England football team on its success in the Euro 96 quarter-finals against Spain; wishes the team well in its forthcoming semi-final with Germany; notes that 18 million people are estimated to have watched live television coverage of the game against Spain; believes that such coverage helps to unite and inspire the nation; notes with concern that, under existing legislation, all coverage of future European football championships could be confined exclusively to minority pay-TV channels, which are currently seen in only 15 per cent. of households; and calls for action to ensure that in the future, as in the past, the key events in the sporting life of the nation can by enjoyed live by the widest possible audience.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
