Conduct Of The Leader Of The Opposition, Parliamentary Accountability And The Single Currency
EDM number 1014 in 1995-96, proposed by Bob Dunn on 18/06/1996.
That this House notes with the utmost alarm that the constitutional implications of a single currency are not the principal concern of the Leader of the Opposition, as he made clear in a speech to the conference of the BDI in Germany; further expresses intense regret that a parliamentarian who has ambitions for the highest elected office in the United Kingdom is prepared to minimise the importance of the democratic process with regard to economic and monetary policy in the context of parliamentary accountability; and urges the British people to take note of the Leader of the Opposition's cavalier dismissal of their historic rights to set monetary policy and to determine levels of taxation through the agency of the national parliament.
