Teachers Action To Protect Education

EDM number 993 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Benn on 19/04/1995.

That this House deplores the cut-backs in educational funding imposed by the Government which will lead to larger class sizes, redundancies amongst teachers and school staff and will greatly damage the prospects for all students; welcomes the decisions reached by the teaching unions to take action designed to bring pressure to bear on the Government to provide the necessary financial resources; believes that one of the most effective forms of action that could be taken would be to continue to teach those pupils who have examinations, and, in addition, to invite all those in the community who face similar cut-backs to come into the schools and describe their own experiences, and then to use the full resources of all schools to campaign publicly to protect public services; and pledges its full support to those local educational authorities, school governors, parents, teachers, staff, students and others who decide to join in such campaigns.
