Survival Of Marine Turtles

EDM number 975 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Banks on 05/04/1995.

That this House is gravely concerned at threats to marine turtles in Sri Lanka and the Maldives arising from the trade in tortoiseshell for the tourist industry; accepts that tourists from Europe including the United Kingdom create this demand; requests all UK tour companies using hotels and resorts in Sri Lanka and the Maldives not to send tourists to places where tortoiseshell is sold; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to enforce legislation which prohibits the import of tortoiseshell and to use its influence with the EU to enforce the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES); and insists that the Sri Lanka and Maldive governments enforce their CITES obligations and bans the import, export or sale of tortoiseshell.
