Tenovus Cancer Charity
EDM number 935 in 1994-95, proposed by Rhodri Morgan on 29/03/1995.
That this House deplores the tragic side-effects on cancer research funded by Tenovus, the Cardiff-based charity which recently reached its half-century and which has now been obliged to abandon scratch-card games as a means of fund-raising, the source of half its funds, caused by the extension of the National Lottery into scratch-card games; draws the attention of the Secretary of State for National Heritage to the inability under present legislation of the National Lottery to fund medical research; calls on him to consider how best to make good the loss to medical research from the all-embracing expansion of the National Lottery and to assist the five hundred pensioners and others who derive a useful part-time income from selling Tenovus scratch-cards; and further calls on him to assure the medical researchers at the Tenovus Institute for cancer will not be frustrated by the side-effects of the National Lottery.
