Australian Grand Prix And Threat To Albert Park, Melbourne

EDM number 924 in 1994-95, proposed by Llew Smith on 29/03/1995.

That this House is concerned that the continuing plans by Bernie Ecclestone, the British-based President of the Formula One Constructors' Association, to build a Grand Prix race track at Albert Park in Melbourne will lead to a desecration of many trees and amenity open space in the park, which has been a green lung for Melbourne residents since 1876; believes that in order to foster open public discussion of the options for developing a new race track venue in Melbourne details of the secret contract between Mr Ecclestone and the Victoria State Government should be made public; acknowledges that the majority of Melbourne people, including the Save Albert Park Campaign and John Brumby, Labour Leader of the Victorian State parliament opposition, support the holding of motor racing grand prix in Melbourne, preferring the development of a new purpose-built track to reclaim the use of the redundant land in the Docklands area or the upgrading of the existing Sandown track; and believes such sustainable development options to be more environmentally acceptable.
