Closure Of The Tenovus Cancer Charity Lottery
EDM number 920 in 1994-95, proposed by Alun Michael on 29/03/1995.
That this House notes with dismay that the Tenovus Cancer Charity has been forced to close its lottery due to the impact of the National Lottery which has resulted in the loss of outlets and a massive reduction in sales; further notes that the Tenovus Lottery has raised over ú10 million during its 15-year lifespan through the sale of eight million tickets per year through kiosks in major supermarkets in England and Wales; further notes that the loss of income exceeds ú1.5 million a year and that all efforts to find replacement sources of revenue have failed; further notes that the impact will be felt pound for pound in reduced cash for medical research and patient care programmes; calls on Her Majesty's Government to consider how the shortfall can be made up in the public interest and in the specific interests of patients and carers; and further calls on the Government to give careful consideration to ways in which the principles of voluntary charitable action and associated fund-raising can be protected and encouraged.
