British Gas Grand Slam Lunch And Conduct Of The Honourable Member For Clackmannan

EDM number 906 in 1994-95, proposed by Alex Salmond on 27/03/1995.

That this House notes the report in the Daily Mirror of 27th March that British Gas has scrapped the national dinner for five hundred workers to honour the winner of the Gold Flame service competition costing ú30 a head only days after hosting the ú13,000 Grand Slam ú650 a head beano for 20 VIP's including the honourable Member for Clackmannan; appreciates the concerns expressed by both the associated unions and the Gas Consumer Council about the Twickenham junket and sympathises with the worker from the Gold Flame winning area of Gloucestershire who complained of the double standards of British Gas bosses who `spend a packet on a lunch for themselves and their cronies but they won't put their hand in their pocket to buy dinner for their workers'; further notes that the attendance of the honourable Member for Clackmannan at the Grand Slam party is totally inappropriate for a Labour spokesperson at a time when the jobs, pay and conditions of gas workers are being cut by the company; and suggests to the honourable Member that in future he restricts his necessary contact with the top management of British Gas to meetings, briefings, working lunches or even to dinners but not to junkets at rugby matches or other sporting occasions.
