That this House congratulates the British Mycological Society on its centenary and recognises its outstanding contribution in promoting the study of fungi and, in particular, its international role in fostering teaching and research; notes the importance of fungi in the maintenance of the environment, production of foodstuffs and alcohol, as agents of disease in man and plants, in the biodeterioration of many materials, in the biocontrol of weeds, pests and vectors of disease; and brings to the attention of Her Majesty's Government the importance of fungal metabolics, including antibiotics, to the pharmaceutical industry and the need to exploit the resources of fungi for the benefit of mankind.
