Transport Research Laboratory

That this House condemns the decision of the Secretary of State for Transport to privatise the Transport Research Laboratory, which puts at risk the nation's premier road research facility and damages fatally the Government's own ability to commission research across a wide range of vital safety issues; notes that whilst the Government is prepared to make guarantees of future work to private sector bidders in order to aid the sale process, it is refusing to give these guarantees while the laboratory remains in the public sector or to remove the Treasury restrictions that limit the laboratory's ability to compete for work; and calls on the Government to end the sale process that is damaging the morale of staff, the laboratory's key asset, and given an undertaking that the laboratory will remain a unified research facility within the public sector.
