Arrest Of Indonesian Trade Union Leader

That this House deplores the jailing of the prominent Indonesian trade unionist, Mr Muchtar Pakpahan, leader of the largest independent trade union in Indonesia and considered by many to be the Lech Walesa of his country; urges the Foreign Secretary, in addition to protesting to the Indonesian government at this gross violation of internationally agreed workplace human rights standards, to despatch a diplomat from the United Kingdom embassy in Jakarta to visit Mr Pakpahan to convey the support of the British people in his struggle for democratic rights; and further urges any future parliamentary groups travelling to Indonesia to visit Mr Pakpahan in prison to express the solidarity of the House.
