Lindis Percy

EDM number 755 in 1994-95, proposed by Max Madden on 08/03/1995.

That this House is dismayed that the Secretary of State for Defence is seeking an injunction to stop Lindis Percy, a midwife from Bradford, from entering Menwith Hill Station in North Yorkshire; notes Menwith Hill Station is owned and controlled by the National Security Agency of America as part of America's global communications network which exclusively serves American military, economic and commercial interests; further notes Menwith Hill Station has the technical capability to tap domestic, business and international telephone calls made in and from the United Kingdom and to report that data to America; is concerned GCHQ staff based at Menwith Hill Station are able to tap telephones without having to obtain a warrant from the Home Secretary as required under the Interception of Communications Act 1985; believes that as Menwith Hill Station was established and has expanded without the approval of Parliament, operates without accountability to Parliament and honourable Members have been denied access, Ms Percy, by entering Menwith Hill Station and thereby highlighting its role as a spy base, performs a most valuable public service; and calls upon an appropriate House of Commons Select Committee to undertake an inquiry into the activities of Menwith Hill Station, especially its role in economic industrial and commercial espionage.

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
