Employment Of Disabled People In The Horticultural Industry
EDM number 753 in 1994-95, proposed by Harry Barnes on 08/03/1995.
That this House notes that, in the Answer from the honourable Member for Maidstone to the honourable Member for Leicester South, of 23rd February, Official Report, column 273, concerning the employment of disabled people in the horticultural industry, the Minister claims that the Government's Disability Discrimination Bill will be of assistance to disabled people employed therein; further notes, however, that the limited provisions of the Government's Disability Discrimination Bill do not apply to enterprises employing 20 or less employees; recognises that, according to the Labour Force Survey, 27,000 people, or 46 per cent. of those employed in the horticultural industry, work in such firms and are not, therefore, covered by the Government's proposed legislation; and urges the Government to listen to the representations of the organisations of and for disabled people and employers' federations such as the Confederation of British Industry and the Employers Disability Forum and to allow the provisions of its proposed Bill to extend to all enterprises, in much the same way as the Civil Rights (Disabled Persons) Bill being proposed by the honourable Member for North East Derbyshire.
This motion has been signed by a total of 32 MPs.
