Extension Of Lottery Activity By Camelot And The Threat To Rochdale Fc, Other;sports Clubs And Charities

EDM number 724 in 1994-95, proposed by Liz Lynne on 02/03/1995.

That this House notes the present success and huge profitability of the National Lottery; notes also that this success has caused a reduction of between 10 per cent. and 20 per cent. in income to football pools and society lotteries; notes that this is having a disastrous effect on charities and sports organisations and that Rochdale Football Club may have to close down because the reduction in pools funding and participation in its own lottery will prevent a new stand being built in order to meet safety standards; recognises that any extension of the activities of Camelot in the form of instant 'scratch' lotteries and mid-week lottery, promoted with full national advertising, will threaten further the viability of sports clubs such as Rochdale FC; further recognises that such an effect could lead to the loss of thousands of jobs; and calls on the Government to prevent Camelot extending its activities until a full public debate has been undertaken into the role and effect of the National Lottery and the balance that should exist between the National Lottery and football pools and other small lotteries.
