Human Rights In The Ivory Coast

That this House notes the US State Department's Country Reports on Human Rights and the report of Amnesty International on the situation in Cote d'Ivoire which document the denial of human rights, restrictions on the freedom of the Press and freedom of assembly, incidents of extra judicial killings, imprisonment without trial and suppression of trade unions; expresses concern that asylum seekers from Cote d'Ivoire are being refused asylum and that some are being held in detention in the United Kingdom; calls on Her Majesty's Government to recognise the nature of the dictatorial regime in Cote d'Ivoire and that asylum seekers face a real threat of imprisonment, torture and persecution if they are returned; and urges the Foreign Secretary to raise these matters at the United Nations.
