Pensions Bill
EDM number 584 in 1994-95, proposed by Alan Meale on 09/02/1995.
That this House is gravely concerned about measures contained within the Government's proposed Pensions Bill; believes that if enacted it will prove to be bad for both company and state pension provision in the United Kingdom; is alarmed that its objectives on occupational pensions will undoubtedly create a false illusion of security, which then would license and encourage lower standards of funding and lead to widespread problems in the future; and further believes that, if Her Majesty's Government is intent upon the path of further reducing state pensions and also the removal of its own guarantees which currently underpin company pensions, it should not shirk away from its representative responsibilities to protect British citizens' pensions but, instead, insist that before such actions are undertaken there should be a range of new stronger measures to limit employer discretion and to extend individual members' rights to a level where they would be able to confidently rely upon their receiving their rightful company pensions.
