Newcastle Upon Tyne City Council

That this House condemns the policies of Her Majesty's Government on local government finance which have forced the City Council of Newcastle upon Tyne into a position where council tax levels must be reduced at the expense of local services and jobs in the coming financial year; calls upon the Secretary of State for the Environment to heed the wishes of council tax payers in the city, as expressed through a survey of opinion conducted by the Newcastle Evening Chronicle, to preserve services and employment levels by allowing the council to set a budget based on the current level of council tax; and reminds the Secretary of State that it is not local government itself which suffers from his harsh settlement but ordinary decent families whose jobs and services are threatened as a result.
