Carbon Monoxide Safety
EDM number 511 in 1994-95, proposed by Jean Corston on 31/01/1995.
That this House welcomes the formation of the Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety Group, comprising experts from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), the Gas Consumers Council, the National Poisons Unit, safety campaigners and the relatives of victims of CO poisoning; notes that RoSPA estimates that up to 200 people die annually, and over 500 are injured, in the United Kingdom as a result of CO poisoning from household appliances; recognises that there is a lack of public understanding about the prevention of further tragedies; and that people living in short-term rented accommodation are particularly at risk because landlords either fail to service gas appliances or carry out DIY repairs; deplores the fact that after four years of compulsory registration for gas installers tens of thousands of them are still not registered; and therefore calls on the Government to mount a publicity campaign to raise awareness, set higher standards of competence in the gas installation industry and institute a certification scheme to ensure regular maintenance by CORGI registered companies.
