Turkey And The European Union (No. 2)
EDM number 496 in 1994-95, proposed by Jim Spicer on 26/01/1995.
That this House welcomes the recent decision by the Turkish Parliament to extend Operation Provide Comfort, so allowing troops from the United States of America, the United Kingdom and France to offer continuing humanitarian assistance and protection to over 400,000 Kurds in Northern Iraq; recognises that the decision demonstrates once again the strategic importance of Turkey as a partner of the West; further welcomes Prime Minister Ciller's announcement of 7th January 1995 to lift curbs on freedom of expression which were introduced in 1982 by the then military administration; and calls upon the members of the European Union to respond positively by moving ahead with the implementation of earlier agreements to establish a customs union with Turkey at the meeting of the Association Council in Brussels on 7th March.
