Intensively Reared Lambs
EDM number 460 in 1994-95, proposed by Gerry Steinberg on 24/01/1995.
That this House notes the progress of research into the artificial control of ovulation in sheep by the feeding or implantation of melatonin and the use of artificial light; is concerned that this could result in ewes lambing three times in a two year period; deplores the implication that lambs may thus be born in the autumn or winter, needing to be kept in units and fed on pellets etc.; and calls upon the Government to act now to prevent the commercial application of these methods in the factory farming of lambs and furthermore oppose any experiments to identify the gene that triggers ovulation and the removal of this gene, which would lead to sheep lambing all year round, which would lead to widespread factory farming of lambs.
