Uruguay Round Of The Gatt

EDM number 46 in 1994-95, proposed by Elliot Morley on 17/11/1994.

That this House is deeply concerned at the possible effect of the Uruguay Round of GATT; believes that there must be provisions within the GATT to accommodate environmental, social and animal welfare standards; and calls on the Government to ensure that the World Trade Organisation accepts that existing standards and safeguards relating to the protection of both wild and domestic animals from unrestrained exploitation are not undermined, that the moratorium on challenges to agricultural laws under GATT is extended to environmental and animal welfare legislation and that WTO procedures are open to public scrutiny and the democratic process.
