Street Children In Britain
EDM number 407 in 1994-95, proposed by David Alton on 18/01/1995.
That this House welcomes the 'World in Action' expose of the thousands of runaway children in Britain; notes the Children's Society estimate that of 10,000 children identified as runaways, one quarter ran away before the age of 11 years, two thirds had slept rough, two fifths had been very frightened, one quarter had been physically assaulted, one tenth sexually assaulted and that to raise money to live one in seven had sex for money, half had stolen and many had begged; and therefore calls for an urgent reappraisal of the effectiveness of the Children Act and the establishment of a national computerised register of runaway children.
