Age Concern Booklet Short Change

That this House congratulates Age Concern for the production of their booklet 'Short Change': notes the concerns raised in the booklet over the sometimes extreme difficulties experienced by pensioners living on low incomes, the erosion of the value of the basic state pension compared to average earnings, the poverty traps and other structural problems inherent in the benefits system, the increasing costs of care and health services; further notes the need for the protection of occupational pensions; notes in conclusion that it must be completely unacceptable in a humane society that any elderly people should have to live in extreme poverty; and recommends to the Government the 'Campaign Themes and Targets' of the booklet as a basis for policy.
