Ken Saro Wiwa (No. 2);amdt. Line 1:

EDM number 375A1 in 1994-95, proposed by Ann Winterton on 16/01/1995.

leave out from 'House' to end and add 'deplores violations of basic human rights wherever they might occur, but notes that Ken Saro Wiwa is facing charges which include the alleged murder of other prominent figures from dissident organisations drawing support from the Ogoni people; further notes that organisations with which he has been associated are alleged to have been utilising intimidation, blackmail, violence and murder against other members of the Ogoni people in order to force their compliance; notes that contrary to claims being made Mr Saro Wiwa's case was scheduled to be heard not by a military tribunal, but by one which includes two serving high court judges and one other individual; notes that sub judice would prevent honourable Members from tabling motions about cases currently before United Kingdom courts and believes that to use such motions to seek to influence the process in other member countries of the Commonwealth is an unwise use of the Order Paper; and whilst regretting the lack of democracy in Nigeria welcomes the commitment of the Nigerian government to the restoration of democracy through its political programme and the work of the National Constitutional Conference which is expected shortly to produce a new draft constitution; and urges Her Majesty's Government to continue to do all that it can positively to encourage progress, difficult as that will inevitably be, towards democratic reform in Nigeria.'.
