Jobs And The Environment (No. 2)
EDM number 312 in 1994-95, proposed by Alan Meale on 19/12/1994.
That this House welcomes the recently published research study Working Future? Jobs and The Environment, published by Friends of The Earth, which outlines a number of positive ways in which Government can take a lead in helping to resolve simultaneously two of Britain's most intractable problems - unemployment and environmental degradation; notes that government and industry in the United Kingdom have, for too long, been reluctant to support strong environmental protection and resources conservation measures on economic grounds; is grateful for this report's findings, which show that in five key sectors: pollution control, energy, materials use, transport and agriculture, there are real opportunities to greatly increase job numbers, industrial competitiveness and efficiency through regulations, public expenditure and fiscal measures which promote environmental protection and natural resource conservation; and calls on Parliament to debate these issues fully and thereafter for Her Majesty's Government to instruct Government departments to find ways of implementing the recommendations of the report.
