Old Duke Pub, Bristol

EDM number 310 in 1994-95, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 19/12/1994.

That this House notes the Old Duke public house in Bristol has built up an excellent reputation for being the home of traditional jazz in the city of Bristol; that jazz musicians and fans from all over the country visit the Old Duke to attend the daily performances, the annual summer street festival and to appreciate the pictures and memorabilia displayed; is alarmed that the decision of the new owners, the Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, is to refurbish the Old Duke and cut the jazz sessions, only allowing in future one or two performances weekly; calls for the new owners to immediately re-think this decision as it would lead to the loss of an important musical focus for local people, tourists and jazz lovers; and believes that the continuation of the Old Duke as a centre for jazz excellence will provide sufficient revenue to justify its future existence.
