Caroline Churchill

EDM number 295 in 1994-95, proposed by DN Campbell-Savours on 15/12/1994.

That this House congratulates the further education lecturer, going under the name of Caroline Churchill for reasons of anonymity, for her frankness in exposing the fraud often inherent in NVQ certification; supports fully her assertion in the Daily Telegraph that current certification is a recipe for cheating, debased standards and meaningless paperwork and corrupts handworking caring and conscientious teachers; notes her statement with its admission that, 'I signed my name 200 times to statements I knew to be false, had I been claiming benefit I might well be in prison now'; recognises the considerable pressure on many lecturers to act similarly and that many teachers feel powerless to protest; questions a system that in part financially awards colleges on the basis of such practices; awaits the results of the NAO inquiry into training with keen interest; and alerts colleges to the fact that honourable and Right honourable Members are closely watching and keenly interested to ensure that the future security of Caroline Churchill as a lecturer is not threatened by college management.
