Gas Prices And Low Income Consumers
EDM number 282 in 1994-95, proposed by John Denham on 14/12/1994.
That this House condemns the decision of British Gas to widen the price differential between those consumers paying by key meters, cash payments and direct debit; notes that, even for modest gas consumption, those paying by key meter will pay the highest gas bills and those paying by direct debit the lowest; believes that key meters and cash payments will be used by consumers on the lowest incomes, including the elderly, the low paid, those relying on benefits and students; further believes that victimising low income consumers in this way is a further unacceptable example of the conduct of a privatised company supplying a basic service; calls on British Gas to reconsider its decision; and urges the Government to amend legislation to enable the Regulator to outlaw such measures in the future.
This motion has been signed by a total of 47 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
