Turkey And The European Union

That this House expresses its utmost concern about the continued violation of human rights by the government of Turkey, including destruction of villages, disappearances and extra-judicial killings; condemns the recent savage prison sentences imposed upon freely elected Members of Parliament on spurious charges and without any evidence being offered in court; notes the concern expressed by governments of the European Union in their recent joint statement in Essen but believes that this concern about human rights should be translated into action; and calls for a halt to all discussions with Turkey on membership of the European Union or a customs union until such time as the six Democracy Party Members of Parliament are released, bans on political parties are lifted, free and fair elections are held, human rights abuses by the government of Turkey are ended, and all Turkish forces are withdrawn from the illegally occupied area in the north of Cyprus.
