Indicators For The UK Environment

That this House warmly welcomes the publication of the report on 46 environmental indicators by the Green Gauge Alliance of environmental NGOs on 8th December; believes that the details of environmental deterioration provided in the report are alarming and a matter of great concern to all citizens; further believes that this concern should be shared by business and commercial interests, politicians and above all by Ministers and officials of the Government; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to meet the challenge posed by the report by adopting the Green Gauge indicators as a means of assessing the performance of the economy and by implementing policies that enhance the quality of the natural environment, recognising that this in turn could contribute significantly to the generation of employment and the improvement of social welfare.
