Democracy Party Trial

EDM number 207 in 1994-95, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 07/12/1994.

That this this House notes that the trial of eight Kurdish Members of the Turkish Parliament, Hatip Dicle, Leyla Zana, Ahmet Turk, Sirri Sadak, Orhan Dogan, Mahmut Alinak, Selim Sadak and Sedat Yurtdas, is expected to conclude on 8th December, that they are charged with treason under Article 125 of the Penal Code which carries the death penalty and that their only crime is to have made speeches and written articles calling for democratic rights for the Kurdish people in Turkey; believes that the trial has been a charade carried out to intimidate the Kurdish people and deter them from raising legitimate demands for basic democratic rights; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to condemn the action of the Turkish authorities and demand the release of the one independent and seven Democracy Party members currently in prison and the full restoration of their Parliamentary rights.
