Plymouth And The Export Of Live Animals
EDM number 168 in 1994-95, proposed by David Jamieson on 01/12/1994.
That this House is concerned that British animals reaching the Continent face welfare standards which, both during transport and at slaughter, can be appallingly low; is further concerned that the majority of calves being exported end up being reared in veal crates, a system which has been illegal in the United Kingdom since 1990 on cruelty grounds; calls on Associated British Ports not to allow the port of Plymouth to be used by vessels carrying live animals to the Continent which will involve animals being transported for more than eight hours without food and rest; urges MT Shipping to stop carrying animals for rearing and slaughter abroad; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to press the United Kingdom's European Union partners to adopt a maximum limit of eight hours on the journeys of animals being transported for slaughter.
