Mrs Rifat Sultana

That this House is dismayed that the husband of Mrs Rifat Sultana has been refused a visa to join his wife and child in Bradford by a British entry clearance officer in Islamabad who decided Mrs Sultana's gross income of ú120 per week was insufficient to maintain her husband and child without recourse to public funds; believes entry clearance officers in Islamabad and elsewhere should be told about the harsh economic facts of life in the United Kingdom; notes that official figures reveal that 10 per cent. of women working full-time in Yorkshire earn less than ú134 gross per week; fears that so long as Ministers allow entry clearance officers to refuse spouses visas to enter the United Kingdom based on unrealistic assumptions about the extent of low pay in the United Kingdom those on low incomes will be denied their rights to family re-union in the United Kingdom; and believes such decisions represent gross discrimination against low income sponsors against which there is little or no effective redress.
