Quebec Constitutional Referendum And Economy

EDM number 1566 in 1994-95, proposed by Alex Salmond on 01/11/1995.

That this House congratulates all of the people of Quebec on the manner in which they conducted their recent referendum on the constitutional future of the province; applauds an exercise in self determination which secured the participation of 92 per cent. of the voting population; welcomes the dignified manner in which Monsieur Lucien Bouchard of the Bloc Quebecois responded to the tiny majority for the 'No' campaign; condemns the foolish remarks of Monsieur Parizeau which have allowed the opponents of Quebec sovereignty to taint the remarkable achievement of coming within a fration of a majority and notes his intended resignation and withdrawal from a leadership position; further notes the strong comments of the Agent General of the Quebec government in the Herald Newspaper correcting the distorted impression being given of the state of the Quebec economy by Unionist politicians in Scotland; and suggests that, since the Quebec economy is currently growing faster than that of either Scotland or the United Kingdom, Labour and Tory politicians should stop causing offence to Quebec citizens and bringing ridicule upon themselves.
