Peace And Democracy In Karachi

EDM number 153 in 1994-95, proposed by Robert Parry on 29/11/1994.

That this House notes with concern the continued and growing unrest in the Sindh Province of Pakistan particularly the political conflict and deteriorating economic and social situation in Karachi; is alarmed at the breakdown of democratic political life and the lengthy detention of elected representatives, particularly 70 year old senator Ishtiace Azher, and senator Mrs Nasreen Jalil, one of only two women members of Pakistan's upper House; is of the view that the problems in Karachi and Sindh can only be solved by political and not military means; and expresses its belief that such a peaceful and democratic solution can be reached only through negotiations in which all political parties can participate on a free and equal basis.

This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs.
