Mr Krishna Maharaj
EDM number 1472 in 1994-95, proposed by Chris Mullin on 17/10/1995.
This House notes with concern the case of Mr Krishna Maharaj, a British citizen who has been on Death Row in Florida for nine years and faces death in the electric chair; notes that Mr Maharaj, who strongly protests his innocence, was convicted after a wholly inadequate trail on the fourth day of which the judge was arrested for allegedly accepting bribes; notes that Mr Maharaj has passed a lie detector test and that the principal prosecution witness has failed one, facts of which the jury were not aware; also notes serious flaws in the ballistic evidence; and calls on the British Government to intervene with a view to securing a fair trial for Mr Maharaj and one in which he is adequately represented so that his claim of innocence can be properly explored.
