Government Policy On Bosnia
EDM number 147 in 1994-95, proposed by Calum Macdonald on 29/11/1994.
That this House deplores the collapse of Government policy in Bosnia, including the failure to defend the 'safe area' of Bihac and the damage caused to the credibility of the UN and NATO; condemns as contrary to existing UN resolutions yesterday's suggestion by the Foreign Secretary that it is now 'reasonable' to discuss a Greater Serbian confederation which would include the Serbian-held part of Bosnia; asks how long the nationalist Serbs are going to be allowed to reject consecutive peace plans, ethnically cleanse territories they possess, shell and terrorise areas they do not, stop UNHCR convoys and seize British soldiers as prisoners without any effective reprisal whatsoever; and calls for an entirely new strategy to provide all necessary military support to the Bosnian Government, as well as economic and humanitarian aid, so that Bosnian forces can secure those objectives endorsed by the UN which Western policy has so far been unable to achieve, namely, restoring the unity and integrity of Bosnia-Hercegovina and reversing the results of ethnic cleansing.
