Remarks Of United States Senator Dole

That this House deplores the remarks of United States Senator Dole regarding Britain's role and commitment in Bosnia-Hercegovina; recognises that thousands of Bosnian civilians rely entirely on British humanitarian relief for their very existence; commends the excellence and dedication of British and other forces on the ground and notes the role the United States Administration has played in undermining the peace in Bosnia-Hercegovina, in particular through encouraging the belief that the current arms embargo will be lifted in favour of one of the combatants; notes that almost all the serious upsurges in violence over the past year have come following inflammatory statements from Washington; particularly regrets the recent decision of the American Congress and Government not to participate in international efforts to stem the flow of weapons to the former Yugoslavia by sea; and calls on the Prime Minister to take the opportunity of this week's meeting to remind Senator Dole of Britain and Europe's leading role in the former Yugoslavia and to impress upon the Senator the need for circumspection.
