Nigeria (No. 2)

EDM number 1448 in 1994-95, proposed by Tony Lloyd on 19/07/1995.

That this House urges Her Majesty's Government to operate with total transparency in arms sales to the Nigerian military regime in order to demonstrate that those sales are not contributing to the worsening situation; urges the Government to enter disussions with Commonwealth partners ahead of the Commonwealth Summit to support the democratic base by introducing measures to support social, political, medical and judicial infrastructure developments within the country whilst at the same time considering sanctions including Nigeria's non-attendance at the summit itself; and further urges Her Majesty's Government to seek co-operation with European Union countries, the United States of America and the United Nations in order to determine what pressure should legitimately be brought to bear on the Nigerian regime in order to bring about the restoration of democratic government and acceptable progresson human rights.
