Anniversary Of The Invasion Of Cyprus

That this House regrets the fact that July 1995 marks the twenty-first anniversary of the illegal invasion of Cyprus by Turkish troops; deplores the long-standing absence of any signs of honest political will by both the Turkish Government and Raul Denktash, the leader of the unrecognised regime in the occupied area, to reach a solution to the tragedy of a divided Cyprus; castigates the Turkish Government for their part in prolonging the division of Cyprus, which deprives hundreds of thousands of Greek and Turkish Cypriots of their basic human rights, homes and properties; denounces the Turkish Government for failing to comply in providing details of the fates of 1,619 people of Cypriot and other origins still missing since 1974; believes that any relationship between Turkey and other EU countries should be tempered until its approach to decent treatment of its citizens is changed for the better; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to exercise its influence to implement United Nations and Security Council Resolution 939, which will bring peace and stability to the region and be in the interests of both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, to make clear to the Turkish Government the United Kingdom's anger at their negative role in opposing a unified independent Cyprus, and to immediately inform the Government of the Republic of Cyprus that Britain, as a guarantor power, is willing to take whatever steps necessary to find a solution including its agreement for the immediate accession of the Republic to the EU which will help and enable all Cypriots irrespective of race, colour or creed, to live together in peace in a united Cyprus.
