Future Of The Patent Office
EDM number 141 in 1994-95, proposed by Alex Carlile on 28/11/1994.
That this House commends the Patent Office, situated in Newport, Gwent, for the contribution which it makes to British industry and commerce; notes that United Kingdom law in relation to intellectual property is respected throughout the world for its clarity, accuracy and security; believes that the removal of the Office from the public sector would reduce the confidence in which the British law is held; regrets the uncertainty within the Office which recent rumour and speculation as to possible privatisation have caused; congratulates the workforce on its campaign for the future of the Office; and calls upon the Government to retain the Patent Office in its present form and status.
