Support For Road Traffic Victims And Victim Families
EDM number 1409 in 1994-95, proposed by Ken Livingstone on 13/07/1995.
That this House notes that 99 years after the first road death in Britain, no Government funding whatsoever is provided for the support of road traffic victims, both injured and bereaved; is amazed and disturbed that loss of property apparently warrants support and Government funding when on the other hand victims of road traffic law violations, which result in horrific deaths and injuries, do not appear to merit any such funding; is astounded that responsibility for support of road traffic victims is denied by both the Home Office and the Department of Transport, as expressed by both these departments to the national charity RoadPeace; is appalled that the support of such a vast group of desperate victims if effectively left by the Government to this organisation but without providing them with the funds for their work; notes that the impact of road death and injury on families it totally unacknowledged and severity compounded by this lack of acknowledgement and lack of care for these victims; and for a share in the responsibility by the Home Office, Department of Transport and Department of Health and for an end to the unfairness and inhuman treatment of road traffic victims and of bereaved families.
