Escalation Of Violence In Sri Lanka

EDM number 1403 in 1994-95, proposed by Elfyn Llwyd on 13/07/1995.

That this House views with regret the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka due to the Government's decision to launch a major offensive against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam in the densely populated northern Jaffna peninsula; notes that while President Kumaratunga has been provoked by the LTTE, the blatant disregard for Tamil civilians shown by some members of the Sinhalese military is a grave cause of concern; utterly condemns the deliberate and gratuitous bombing of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church at Navaly which resulted in the deaths of 65 innocent civilians seeking refuge; is further alarmed by the spate of necklace killings in Colombo; recognises that the series of pogroms against Tamils suggests that a significant section of Sinhalese society has concluded that ethnic cleansing is the only solution to the problems of Sri Lanka; and therefore calls on the government to impose a moratorium on all removal notices on Tamil people until social stability returns to Sri Lanka.
