Human Rights Violations In Pakistan
EDM number 1401 in 1994-95, proposed by Robert Parry on 13/07/1995.
That this House notes with concern the rapidly deteriorating social, economic and security situation in Pakistan, and particularly in the country's commercial capital, Karachi; further notes the recent disturbing report from Amnesty International, which highlights the complicity of sections of the state and security forces with acts of terror aimed at criminalising the legitimate activities of legal and democratic political parties, particularly the Mohajir Quami Movement (MQM) led by Altaf Hussain; also notes that the MQM enjoys mass support among the people of Karachi and elsewhere in urban Sindh, and condemns the detention of its elected representatives and party workers, as well as the independently verified torture of detainees, the disappearance of party activists and their family members, and the rape and sexual abuse of Mohajir women also condemns the levelling of diversionary treason charges against other opposition figures, including a former prime minister; expresses its belief that a catastrophe can only be averted through inclusive and high level talks among all political parties and social forces, with the safety and security of all participants guaranteed; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to convey those concerns and views to the government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan at the highest level as a matter of urgency, and support the concern of the British Afro Asian People's Solidarity Organisation.
