Gaelic Broadcasting And BBC Charter

EDM number 1395 in 1994-95, proposed by Calum Macdonald on 12/07/1995.

That this House welcomes past progress in Gaelic broadcasting in both television and radio in Scotland; believes that the continuing commitment of the BBC, as the major public service broadcaster, is central in maintaining this progress; recalls that as far back as 1982, the Broadcasting Council for Scotland endorsed the recommendations of the BBC's Gaelic Study Group for a national Gaelic radio service, broadcasting for some 65 hours a week, plus a minimum of two hours television a week, excluding programmes funded by the Gaelic Television Committee; believes that the time is right for a new commitment to those targets by the BBC; and urges that these targets be included within the management agreement to be concluded between the Government and the BBC as part of the Charter Review process.

This motion has been signed by a total of 44 MPs.
