Fatal Accidents - Roads
EDM number 139 in 1994-95, proposed by Alan Meale on 28/11/1994.
That this House is alarmed to learn from statistics that drivers under the age of 21 years are involved in at least 1,000 of the almost 3,500 fatal accidents that occur each year in Britain; commends the research commissioned by the AA Foundation for Road Safety, which called for the Government to instigate an increase in the number of pre-driver training schemes based in schools, the introduction of a separate theoretical test for learner drivers and the establishment of a scheme linking post test driver training to insurance discount for successful participants; believes that the Government should do everything possible to deter and discourage bad driving, particularly amongst the young; and calls on the Government to work closely with all organisations committed to better training and road practice for drivers on the nation's roads.
