ALZHEIMER'S AWARENESS WEEK: RIGHT FROM THE START

That this House welcomes the publication of the report, Right from the Start: Primary Health Care and Dementia by the Alzheimer's Disease Society to mark Alzheimer's Awareness Week, 3rd to 9th July; notes with concern that the report shows only 24 per cent. of carers think that their general practitioner's knowledge of dementia was very good and that 70 per cent. of general practitioners felt that they had not received adequate training in the management of dementia; notes, furthermore, that new estimates by the society show the annual incidence of dementia is 180,000; and calls on the Government to recognise the importance of early diagnosis and assessment for people with dementia and their carers and to prioritise general practitioner training and education on dementia.
