International Moves To Scrutinise The World Bank

That this House applauds moves by the governments of the United States of America, Canada, Switzerland and Australia to revise their policies towards the World Bank in favour of increased democratic scrutiny and accountability; suggests that such moves indicate the commitment of those nations to ensuring that aid disbursement is guided by financial responsibility and democratic accountability; welcomes the recent vote in the German Bundestag to join the international movement to hold the World Bank to account; notes with concern that Britain is behind in developing a national strategy to improve the effectiveness of international financial institutions; and calls upon the Government to consult on and draft legislation to bring the policies and practices of those institutions under fuller parliamentary scrutiny as soon as it is practicable.
