That this House is aware of the positive and democratic role played by the United Nations International Labour Organisation based in Geneva, a body recognised by the United Kingdom and all other governments in the free world as having expertise in setting down worldwide minimum standards for workers in areas such as freedom of association, health and safety and equal pay; is therefore shocked and embarrassed to learn that despite repeated requests from this august body, Her Majesty's Government continues to refuse to remove its trades union ban at GCHQ, an action in flagrant violation of the ILO's most central Convention (87) on Freedom of Association, an agreement ratified by Britain as far back as 1949; calls upon Her Majesty's Government to realise the seriousness of the charges made against them, the first such action arraigned in this way against any western government by the ILO; and further insists that the ban on trades union membership at GCHQ be ended immediately.
