Meeting Of Secretary Of State For Northern Ireland With Mr Gerard Adams
EDM number 1136 in 1994-95, proposed by David Trimble on 17/05/1995.
That this House recalls that on the occasion of his last visit to Washington the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland advised President Clinton against meeting and shaking the hand of Mr Gerard Adams of Sinn Fein/IRA because of the failure of the IRA to 'decommission' its arsenal of guns and explosives; notes with dismay press reports that the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland is seeking to arrange, on the occasion of his visit to Washington in the week of 22nd May, an opportunity to meet Mr Adams and shake his hand despite the absence of any discernable progress on 'decommissioning'; and calls on the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland to clarify his position.
